SSCU volunteers provide support to patients as they prepare for and recover from day surgery prior to being discharged. SSCU is located on the mezzanine level in the 15th Street Atrium and is a very busy volunteer area. From April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020, twenty volunteers clocked a total of 1,314 hours of service. Duties are varied and include providing comfort to those awaiting surgery, particularly if they are alone, and being available after surgery under the nurses’ direction. Another important duty is interacting with the patients’ families who are often more concerned than the patients themselves. When patients are discharged from SSCU, volunteers are responsible for escorting them by wheelchair and ensuring that they are safely taken care of before leaving the hospital premises. SSCU volunteers also help out by providing fresh coffee for the medical staff.
